St. Ferdinand (San Fernando; 1199-1252) was a great and holy king of Castile and Leon, the areas of what we call today central Spain. He finished the Christian Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula, conquering almost half of it and removing forever the Muslim governments of the area. He was also a very devout man, a Third Order Franciscan, known for his kindness to his subjects.

Over the course of three decades, he routed the Muslim armies of central and southern Spain, eventually incorporating much of those lands into his kingdom. He was on the verge of taking the war over the water, to Morocco of northern Africa, when he died of the plague.

He often fasted and performed other mortifications. He had long prayer sessions going late into the night. He founded many churches, monasteries, and hospitals. He was careful not to over-tax his subjects, as he said he feared the curse of one poor woman more than a whole army of Saracens. Cousin to St. Louis. Canonized in 1671. Feast Day May 30th.
